How To Use Background Removal On An Image In Photoshop

As promised in my earlier articles, hello, I am Abrar and today I am here to show you how to remove Background from an image using Photoshop. To be used to this style of editing you have to be familiar to the usage of Photoshop and a good concept on Background Removal. A brief read on my previous articles on the editing process will be of great help to you.

Recommended Software

Photoshop CS6 or at least Photoshop CS3 is required for this operation. I used Photoshop CS6 for the execution shown below.

So let’s get on with the steps of how to remove backgrounds of images. Images are also shown to graphically assist you throughout this operation.

Step-1: Getting the Image Ready

Select and open the image that is going to be operated on. The image must be in good shape and the object that is going to be unified from the background should be clear and significant. The image shown below is a good example.

Step-2: Opening image in Photoshop

Photoshop CS6 is opened and the preferred image is opened to execute the Background Removal process on the image. The image properties and format should support the software too.

Step-3: Selecting path and creating a new one

From the windows tray of Photoshop CS6 the “Path” option is selected. A box on the left appears with a heading “Path.” As shown in the image, a new path is to be selected. This feature assists to keep a track of the proceeding steps and minimizes errors that occurs.

Step-4: Use of Pen Tool

As shown in the image, ‘Pen tool” from the left tray of the software is selected

The “Pen tool” is than used on the subject of the image which is needed to unify from the background. The pen tool is used to draw an outline on the subject carefully as shown in the image below. Zooming in to the image makes it easier to put an outline on the image.

This outline has to be drawn all over the subject that needs to be unified.

Step-5: Selecting Background Eraser tool and making layers

After the use of pen tool to outline the subject of the image, the “Background eraser” tool is to be selected from the left tray of the software shown in the image below. Two layers are to be made from the right tray of the software. Layers are an essential copy of the image where multiple effects can be provided to it. Two layers are enough for this operation.

Step-6: Manipulation of Layers and usage of Background eraser tool

2 layers are to be closed or unmarked leaving the “layer 1 copy” on or marked. After this the “Background Eraser” is to be used on the background. A fair portion should be done with the layer 1 copy activated as shown below.

Step-7: Final Execution and result

With a fair portion of the background whitened and layered and the layer 1 copy on or marked, simply press delete. This orders the software to completely remove the background from the unified object.

There goes, 7 easy steps through which Background Removal is applied on an image and the subject is unified from the background and is clarified for further use.
